TRUST HOSTS EUROPEAN
INTERN
During the past summer the Trust was pleased to participate
in a Fellowship in Land Stewardship for Conservation Professionals
from Central Europe. Magdalena Tracz, a Wildlife Specialist at Insko
Landscape Park, a refuge in the northwestern region of Poland, was
particularly well suited to visit the Trust because of her interest
in landscape protection and management of lands for wildlife habitat.
The fellowship program, sponsored by Quebec-Labrador Foundation-Atlantic
Center for the Environment, focused on stewardship as an overall
topic, addressing conservation issues in park land use, and encouraging
personal responsibility for sound natural resource management. Magda's
three-day experience included an overview of the LRCT mission, history
and present goals; orientation to the membership and development
functions, and an analysis of the 5-Mile Island acquisition. Also
included were tax map and topographical research on Ossipee Mountain
and Squam watershed projects. This research was followed by a site
visit to conservation properties and the construction of a case
statement and fund development plan to support these community based
efforts. "We were able to provide Magda with a good overview of
conservation in the region," noted LRCT Membership and Development
Coordinator Colleen Conway. "I think she was impressed with the
level of activity in our organization, and with the creativity displayed
in committee meetings. As a naturalist, Magda found the diversity
of our forest species fascinating, and our natural landscape to
be of great interest. I'm also pretty sure she's never seen a lake
as large as Winnipesaukee in her life!" The QLA Fellowship provided
a good exchange of ideas and innovations in the areas of conservation
and stewardship while contributing to the potential for the growth
of the non-profit sector in Central and Eastern Europe. Magda's
was the third opportunity for the Trust to work together with the
Quebec-Labrador Foundation, and we look forward to future collaboration
in the service of education and conservation.
