RED HILL AND
ITS SURROUNDINGS

The eastern summit of Red Hill and Lake Winnipesaukee viewed
from the Red Hill firetower.
Red Hill is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Lakes Region.
It encompasses over 8 square miles of wooded slopes and ridgelines
that rise abruptly from the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake,
and Lake Kanasatka to a height of 2,020 feet above sea level, giving
Red Hill prominent visibility from 11 towns that lie at the junction
of the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. More than 5,000 persons
annually use a network of trails to enjoy a view that has been described
as one of the finest in New England. The forests of Red Hill provide
prime wildlife habitat for moose, bear, deer, woodcock, songbirds,
and ruffed grouse. Red Hill has been protected because its landowners
have treated their land with care and forethought, because conservation
donors have acted generously when opportunities have presented themselves,
and because a hardworking group of stewards have seen to it that trails
and vistas of Red Hill have remained open and faithfully cared for.
